DRUMMING up support… Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service’s Corps of Drums and Pipe Band are on the look-out for new members.
Drummer John Fisher, pictured at a recent bash in Dawlish, says his group are anxious to attract new blood as two regulars are about to take their leave.
‘We could always do with more musicians. We are part of a community-based initiative which supports the fire service’s charity work. We have some great times,’ said the Ashburton-based drummer.
He said the band was particularly interested in persuading fife players to its ranks, those who can play a mean tune on a military flute.
Participation does include a fair bit of travel with previous gigs roping in most of Europe, especially regular remembrance services at the famous Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium.
Drum Major Ian Washburn BEM, formerly of the Grenadier Guards, confirmed: ‘We are always on the lookout for new members and membership is open to anyone over the age of 16 years.
‘The members of the corps are not only serving firefighters and support staff but also people from the wider community.’
The corps rehearse at the fire service HQ near Exeter usually one evening a week as well as one Sunday morning a month.
Uniform, instruments, transport and practice venues are free as is accommodation when the band is away.
‘You don’t have to have previous experience in playing the drum and bugle but it obviously helps. A lot of tuition can be sent via various video and audio links,’ said Ian.
