MORE than 2,000 residential burglaries were recorded last year, according to figures released following a Freedom of Information request.

Figures from Devon and Cornwall Police show that 2,222 residential burglaries were recorded between January 1 and December 31, 2025.

The highest number of offences were recorded between midday and 5.59pm, with 650 burglaries during this period.

A further 554 were recorded between 6pm and 11.59pm, while 514 were recorded between 6am and 11.59am.

There were 504 burglaries recorded between midnight and 5.59am.

The figures are based on the date the crimes were recorded by police, which may differ from when the offence occurred or was reported.

Times may also be estimates where the exact time of an offence was unknown or unclear.

Burglars can use a variety of methods to avoid being noticed, with distraction burglary being one way offenders can gain access to a property.

Distraction burglars pretend to be someone they are not in order to persuade residents to let them into their homes.

They may claim to be from a care agency, the council or a utility company investigating a problem such as a gas or water leak.

Other tactics can include asking for help to leave a note for a neighbour, requesting a drink of water because they claim to be thirsty or unwell, or saying they are dealing with an emergency and need to enter the property quickly.

Burglars may also work in teams, with one person distracting the homeowner while another searches the property.

Residents are advised to be cautious about unexpected callers and to check their identity before allowing anyone into their home.
