THE search is on for Devon's Best Young Landscape Artist 2023. The organisers are currently seeking talented young artists capable of capturing the diverse and exquisite natural landscapes found throughout the county, from its untamed moorlands to its serene river valleys.

Artists who are 18 or younger have until the end of September to submit their artwork, which can be a painting, drawing, textile, collage, or mixed media peice showcasing a scenic view of Devon.

The artwork could depict a beloved beach, a picturesque location, a local park or green space, a place visited during an outing, or even the artist's own backyard.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of each category, and the most exceptional entries will be displayed at the Museum of Dartmoor Life in Okehampton.

The competition was launched two years ago, thanks to the support of Kath Hadden, a landscape artist based in Exeter. Kath, along with the competition's director, Penny Mills, assists in selecting the prize winners. The judges have consistently been impressed by the remarkable talent displayed by the county's young artists.

In the previous edition, two winners were chosen: Angelie Pickett, a 15-year-old artist, won in the older age group with her accomplished painting of Ugborough, while Sophia Lopez Clarkson, an 11-year-old, secured the victory in the younger age group with her vibrant depiction of Belstone River.

Penny Mills, the Director of Devon CPRE, said: 'Kath and I thoroughly enjoy reviewing all the artwork, and we are consistently amazed by the talent displayed by the participating children and teenagers.

'We love their interpretations of Devon's coastline and countryside, and we eagerly await what the year 2023 will bring. Undoubtedly, we will face a challenging task in selecting this year's winners.'

Entering the competition is simple, and there are cash prizes for each age category: £100 for the winner in each category and £25 runner-up prizes. There are two entry categories: one for teenagers (ages 12-18) and one for younger children (ages 7-11).

To participate, artists must send their entry, which should be either A3 or A4 size, along with their name, age, and contact details written on the back. It is preferable to include an email address and telephone number. Submissions should be sent by mail to Devon CPRE, PO Box 26, Beaworthy, EX21 5XN.

If artists wish to have their artwork returned, they should include a stamped addressed envelope. (Note: Appropriate postage is required, as the organizers regretfully cannot return paintings without the necessary postage.) The deadline for submissions is Saturday, September 30, 2023.
