Keith Sencelles, of Abbey Road, Torquay, writes:

I travelled from Torquay to attend this year's carnival queen crowning ceremony in Newton Abbot, having enjoyed last year's effort, but I have to say that I was most disappointed.

Last year's affair was quite charming; full of fun and spontaneity, but something seems to have gone badly wrong this time round.

I realise that rehearsals take up people's time, but surely it is worth the effort to get things right on the day?

It was apparent from the disjointed, charmless and overlong production – especially with the floral tributes, which soon became boring – that many of those taking part had little or no idea of what they were supposed to be doing, or why. The rather strange dancing towards the end was frankly peculiar and the whole thing left me wondering why I had bothered.

We have many fine traditions and events that we are justifiably proud of, many of them organised by volunteer groups.

I can think of the Bridgwater Carnival, the Helston Floral Dance, the Padstow 'Obby 'Oss and the Lustleigh May Day celebrations to name but a few. These are well- organised, lively and colourful shows that the organisers can be proud of.

Unless those responsible for the organisation of these small provincial affairs can put a lot more time and effort into the production, it might be kinder to let them die a natural death.
