TEIGNMOUTH Town Council plans 'to tackle head-on' the dredging in and around the port.
It is to invite professional opinion on the effects of the movement of sand after river users raised concern about possible subsidence at the Back beach. They say that the plough Teign C is working too close to the beach which may cause it to subside. Former Harbour Master Reg Matthews told Tuesday's finance and general purposes committee: 'If they take the sand too far away, there goes your sea defences. 'When I was Harbour Master we were told that sand could not be taken out of circulation, but now the Point car park could be in big trouble,' he said. Cllr Vince Fusco called for a meeting with DEFRA to discuss concerns. 'Are we going to stand back and let this happen or are we going to put our foot down and tackle this head on? 'If we let this carry on, then it's going to be too late,' he said. Cllr Chris Whitlock said that it was 'ironic that we are talking about flood defences at one beach while the sea defences are being eroded at the other.'
