AN ELDERLY driver came close to disaster on Wednesday when she reversed the car she was driving into a pump in the town's petrol station.
No petrol was spilled and nobody was injured in the incident, which happened at County Garage, Bitton Park Road, around 1.30pm.
The elderly woman driver was described as being very shaken up by the smash.
Her car, a Proton, also clipped a parked Nissan Almera during the ill-fated reversing manoeuvre.
Two fire appliances from Teignmouth and Dawlish stood by at the scene but were not required.
Marcia Syth, assistant manager at County Garage, said it was a close call.
She said: 'The lady lost control of her car and hit a bin and post and part of a petrol pump.
'Luckily there wasn't much damage but we had to shut the petrol supply off to the pumps as a precaution.
'The lady was taken home by paramedics, though she didn't need any medical treatment.
'But she was very shaken up by the accident. It could have been a lot worse though.
'It was a close thing really.'
