DRIVERS on the A38 are having a bloomin’ marvellous time – but they have to take their eyes off the road to do so.

A brief glimpse to the left or right – depending on the direction of travel – will afford them a colour-filled vision of floral loveliness.

The magnificent wild flower display is currently on show along the Devon Expressway between Ashburton and Ivybridge.

This dazzling display of all flora bright and beautiful is the third ‘grassland enrichment scheme’ in the South West coming to fruition, adding a total of 15 hectares of flower-rich roadside to the region.

It is part of Highways England’s ambition to increase biodiversity on verdant verges.

A spokesman said: ‘The scheme will support pollinators and other invertebrates by creating a space for wildlife within the network we manage – and it will promote their movement across the wider landscape.’

The planting project started last year with the green-fingered team carrying out a baseline assessment which identified 198 different species of invertebrates, five of which known to be of conservation interest including – rare species of beetles and weevils. Next year, once the wild flowers have had time to establish, the team will return to investigate the depth of the benefits the work has had on supporting wildlife in the area.
