Interested in journalism? Meet the team at the Mid Devon Advertiser!

On Monday January 22, five First Federation schools visited the Mid-Devon Advertiser in Newton Abbot. The children learned about the life cycle of a newspaper, tips on writing reports, different roles (e.g. photographer, editor and advertiser) and met new people.

PJ was the head journalist. He told the children about Ruby the dog and her column. Each week, if you spot Ruby’s picture in the paper, you could win a prize. PJ showed the children some shorthand, which is a type of quick writing.

The children also met a journalist called Kate. She gave them tips about writing and told them the life cycle of a newspaper. First, the journalists find out what happened from witnesses and write it down. They send it to the editor who checks the spelling and punctuation. She sends it to the graphic designer who adds photos (from the photographer) and colour to the pages.

At the end of the process, everything is sent off to Southampton to be produced.

The children had a wonderful day and went home with lots of ideas.
