STUDENTS at Coombeshead Academy in Newton Abbot raised £800 for ABF, The soldiers’ charity.

The school held a special charity day in support of family members of those who serve in the armed forces.

The students came dressed in red, white and blue clothing and donated £1 each.

History lessons for the day focused on the events that shaped the summer of 1916, in particular the Battle of the Somme.

Year 8 students were also given a talk from Robert Jordan from the charity, Sergeant George Pas, formerly of the 6th Battalion The Rifles, and members of the armed forces.

At lunchtime the students were treated with an inflatable assault course and a climbing wall.

History teacher Stephanie Medhurst said: ‘This was a fantastic day for the students involved.

‘Thank you and well done to everyone that participated.’
