A TOUCH of Hollywood arrived at Buckfast Abbey on Tuesday, as local schoolchildren dressed in style to view the world premiere of a film they’d made about their school.

All the pupils of St Mary’s Catholic Primary School Buckfast donned glitzy red carpet attire and walked a hall of fame, where each child and teacher had a star.

Anna Harris, of the abbey, said: ‘The children really enjoyed making such an entrance and it all went very well, despite the heat. All of the school dressed up and walked down a red carpet, posed with the Oscar-style statues, and then watched the film. The children and the walkway looked amazing, and lots of parents came along too.’

The seven-minute movie was shown on the big screen in the abbey’s conference centre, as well as a bloopers reel of filming.

The whole school created the film with the education and media teams at the abbey, to showcase St Mary’s to prospective parents.

While the initiative came from headteacher Nicola Slack and some of the school governors, all the ideas came from the children.

One of the Year 6 pupils said: ‘We have a great school and we wanted to show everyone. Our school is the best, it is small and friendly.’

As well as developing the film, the children also wrote it, starred in it and did much of the actual filming. They were helped by Michael Davies and Callum Hall, from Buckfast Media Studios, and Alison Gagg and Anna Harris, from the abbey’s education department.

Alison, education manager at the abbey, said: ‘Some of the pupils had worked with our team last year to produce a film promoting the work of this department, and they so caught the filming bug they wanted to do it again. But this time they wanted to make it about themselves. We were delighted to be able to help them.’

The film starts with the children arriving at school and moves on to show many aspects of the school’s work including their award-winning outdoor education. Following this week’s premiere it’s now available to view on the school’s website.
