A Newton Abbot College student is hoping to represent the county in a regional heat of Miss England 2009.
Sarah-Jane Hughes, 17, of Kingsteignton, hopes to gain as many votes as possible. As an additional task she is trying to raise as much money and awareness as she can for the National Autistic Society.
She is enlisting the assistance of family and friends to organise fundraising events throughout February.
The sixth form student is also a young carer and works part time in New Look, Newton Abbot.
In her spare time she enjoys trampolining with South Devon Flyers at Newton Abbot Leisure Centre.
She is currently a sports ambassador representing Newton Abbot College and spent spent five years on the school council.
'It is the first time I have ever entered anything like this,'she said.
'I applied online and was really pleased to get shortlisted. I am really hoping to get through to the national rounds, only three make it from the Devon section.'
