A DOWNPOUR of rain failed to dampen festive spirits at Newton Abbot's annual Victorian Evening, on Wednesday, which attracted a record number of stalls.
Manned by members of different organisations in Victorian outfits raising money for charity, the 48 stalls filled Market Walk and the Market Square.
Though the rain kept some people away, events coordinator Natalie Burridge, of Newton Abbot Town Council, was delighted with the success of the evening.
'A big thank you to the stallholders who looked outstanding even with the inclement weather. Visitor numbers were up on last year and it was a very enjoyable night,' she said.
The trophy and a £50 cheque for their charity for the best dressed stall went to KingsCare League of Friends, Kingsteignton.
Pupils of All Saints and Bearne's primary schools sang Christmas carols accompanied by the Newton Abbot Salvation Army Band and there was entertainment from the Newton Abbot Ukulele Club and a vintage steam organ.
Children were entertained with balloon modelling, Punch and Judy and more than 100 visited Santa's Grotto. He is back again in St Leonard's Tower on the Wednesday Late Night Shopping Nights.
