A NEW Memory Cafe has been launched at a Newton Abbot care home.
Staff at Wolborough Court in College Road could see there was a need for people caring for a loved one at home with dementia to have a safe, welcoming space.
In response they set up the cafe to provide a chance for people to come together for a drink, a chat and mutual support.
The first cafe was described as a ‘huge success’.
A spokesman for the care home said: ‘We welcomed
members of the local community for a morning focused on connection, support, and shared experience.
‘The café has been created to provide a safe and welcoming space for people caring for a loved one at home with dementia, offering an opportunity to meet others in similar situations in a relaxed setting.
‘The inaugural session followed a sensory theme, using familiar aromas such as freshly brewed coffee, warm bread, and hands-on aroma dough to encourage reminiscence and conversation.
‘Attendees also enjoyed cake and coffee, took part in a quiz, and joined in with group singing, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere throughout the morning.’
The positive response has led to organisers confirming the cafe will now be held on the third Thursday of every month.
The next session is scheduled for Thursday February 19, from 10.00am to noon.
Each session will feature a different theme, while continuing to provide a friendly and supportive environment. Attendance is free, and all are welcome.
