FIRST Division Castaways forced Premier leaders and defending champions Commuters to an extra leg play-off in their Newton Abbot and District Skittles League Plate Competition preliminary round.

Commuters are virtually impregnable on their Highweek Family and Social Club alley, but Brian Bailey's side forced them all the way in this front pin competition.

After six ends they were locked on 273-apiece but Commuters came home with a 55 leg to 31, Mike Steer getting 61 from his seven throws for the winners and Jon Bailey recording 49 for the Division One side.

In the third round of the Woodbine Cup, Force 8 smacked out 454 pins on their visit to Newton Abbot Royal British Legion in their clash with Bottlewashers who trailed by 50.

Force 8, whose top score was Phil Pearce on 68, took the game by the scruff of the neck with a 97 second leg. Best for Bottlewashers was John Brimicombe also with 68.
