AN ‘open door’ policy at Lloyds Bank’s Newton Abbot branch went viral on Facebook on Monday evening.
While all the money may have been safely locked away in the bank’s vaults, its front door just off Courtenay Street was unlocked according to one passer-by.
He took to popular local Facebook group ‘Spotted Newton Abbot’ to post a picture of himself at the front door that was ajar after opening hours.
He said ‘I come [sic] across Lloyd’s Bank open doors called police didn’t turn up till 25 minutes later.’
He then added some pictures, allegedly taken inside the empty bank.
A police spokesperson confirmed: ‘Police were called at 6.15pm to a commercial premises on Courtenay Street, Newton Abbot, following reports of an alarm sounding and door open.
‘Officers attended to check the fire door and contacted staff who attended to secure the premises.’
They confirmed that no arrrests had been made.
When editor Nick Knight called in at the branch and made a few inquiries he was asked to wait for a manager who introduced himself as Jonathan but said he was ‘absolutely unable to say anything’ and directed Nick towards the bank’s media office.
By Tuesday afternoon nealy 400 people had liked the post with nearly 150 comments including:
‘Nice to see Lloyd’s has a new open door policy.’
‘Finally a bank which is still open in town.’
‘It’s a self service bank.’
‘At least they didn’t ‘blow the bloody doors off’
‘Hope they rewarded you.’
‘Finders keepers if found any notes on floor!’
‘Who is that, it’s so funny!’
A Lloyds Bank spokesperson said: ‘There was an isolated fault with a door at our Newton Abbot Lloyds Bank branch yesterday, and our colleagues and the police attended quickly once the automatic alarm activated.
‘The issue is now fixed.’
