NEARLY 60 homes in Newton Abbot were plunged into darkness over the weekend after a cable fault in Gothic Road.

Power went out in 59 homes just before 9pm on Friday night, came back on for a brief spell before 11pm, and cut out again until just after midday on Saturday.

A spokesman for Western Power said the blackout was a result of a faulty cable in Gothic Road which caused fuses to blow at the nearby substation.

The engineers had to dig the road up to fix the fault.

Some residents were put on a generator before full power was restored before 1pm on Saturday.
