PARENTS and carers across Devon are being encouraged to have open conversations with young people about staying safe ahead of festivals and summer events.

Devon County Council has launched a new online resource offering practical advice to help young people enjoy summer gatherings with confidence while making safe and informed choices.

The guidance covers a range of topics that families may wish to discuss before attending events, including travel plans, keeping in contact, looking after friends, mental wellbeing, relationships, alcohol and drugs, hot weather, water safety and what to do if arrangements change unexpectedly.

It also includes advice for parents and carers on how to prepare for events, start conversations with young people and provide support before and after they attend.

The resource signposts families to trusted sources of information and support.

Councillor Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, Cabinet Member for Public Health, said summer festivals and outdoor events can be valuable experiences that help young people develop independence and create memories with friends.

‘Having a simple, open conversation before they go can make a real difference’, she said.

‘Parents and carers do not need to have all the answers. What matters most is keeping communication open so that young people feel able to ask for help, make informed decisions and know someone is there to support them’.

The guidance has been developed with popular summer events attended by young people from Devon in mind, including Boardmasters, Beautiful Days and Tunes Festivals.

However, the advice is designed to support anyone preparing for a festival, outdoor gathering or summer event.

Devon County Council says the resource aims to help families plan ahead and ensure young people can enjoy their summer safely while having the confidence to seek support if they need it.
