A Teignbridge councillor whose Kingsteignton ward includes illegal off-road motorcycling sites has formally called on the council to urgently renew its search for alternatives. Cllr Sandra Heath, who represents Kingsteignton West and Teigngrace, set down the formal motion at a meeting of the full council at Forde House, Newton Abbot. She asked that Teignbridge renews a commitment it had first made in March 2002, after the loss of facilities at Bovey Heathfield when it was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and given nature reserve status. She said that despite a joint report into the issue with Devon Wildlife Trust in 2004, the council had concluded last year that 'no further action' should be taken. The off-road bikers were now not only causing a nuisance for residents, she said, but endangering their own lives by riding close to silt ponds and failing to wear protective clothing on the unregulated sites. Her motion read: 'In the event of a suitable permanent site not being immediately available, a recreational space for the purpose of off-roading is made with the Local Development Framework, whereby public consultation will establish the level of support.' Last month, the Advertiser reported that a Kingsteignton father, Dale Walker, had provisionally identified five sites which he was potentially prepared to buy or rent. They include disused quarries and locations next to busy main roads where background noise is already high. He has yet to approach landowners, however, explaining that he first needed guidance from planners. 'We need to understand what sort of permission would be needed and what sort of restrictions would be put on us,' he said. 'We are looking for maximum support in this project and welcome other like-minded people to help the youngsters of Teignbridge find a recreation area. We urge council members, large local industries and landowners to join together to make it happen.' Cllr Heath's motion is to be considered by the council's executive later this month.
