FIRE crews were alerted to a car fire in Ashburton on Saturday night.

Reports came in that the vehicle was alight just before 11pm in East Street.

Firefighters from the town were sent to the scene where they discovered a small fire in the engine compartment involving the battery.

The fire was already out when they arrived so the crew carried out an inspection of the vehicle.
