THE dedication of Teignmouth firefighters was praised at the official opening of the town's new fire station on Saturday. Cllr Bernard Hughes, chairman of the Devon Fire and Rescue Authority, told the gathering that the £600,000 building 'would be nothing without the dedication of the firefighters who look after the local community. 'I wish to offer a huge thank you to you and your families. May you continue to serve the community in the way you have traditionally done.' Among those present were chief fire officer Paul Young, deputy chief fire officer Robert Fyfe, deputy chief officer Sue Smith, Teignbridge MP Richard Younger-Ross, and Teignmouth mayor Cllr Geoff Bladon. Mr Young said: 'I am delighted that we have finally reached the end of, what was at times, a very bumpy road. This new fire station has been much needed for a very long time and has only been achieved by a great effort on the part of a lot of people. 'I wish to offer my grateful thanks to all of them and especially to the firefighters of Teignmouth, who have, for a very long time, put up with inadequate accommodation.' The new station at Higher Brook Street has been praised for its central location and easy access to the main route in and out of the town.
