TEIGNMOUTH lifeboat fundraisers are among the top five in the country after raising £100,000 in the past year.

Now they have been given a civic reception as a thank you.

The mayor and mayoress, Cllr Ian Parkes and his wife Eileen, hosted the event at Bitton House on Tuesday to congratulate them for raising the record in the past year.

He presented the committee chairman Lorraine Lizius with a commemorative certificate on behalf of the town council for the 'wonderful achievement'.

He added: 'I also want to thank the people of the town for once again supporting their lifeboat, and digging deep in their pockets at a time when every penny is being counted.'

He singled out Roger Hawkins, who had received an RNLI bronze award in recognition of his efforts.

Ms Lizius, in return, thanked the mayor and mayoress for their support, and praised the volunteers and committee for their work.

Cash came from bucket collections, book sales, tombolas, a raffle, summer events at Huntly, Bishopsteignton; Ugbrooke House, Chudleigh; Jason's Garden, Teignmouth; and the annual Boxing Day walk into the sea at Teignmouth..
