A LOCAL runner's remarkable challenge of completing 31 marathons in 31 days took a special turn when one of the runs began at Animals in Distress' Rescue Centre in Ipplepen.
Alby Walters, a member of Riviera Racers running club, is running a marathon every day throughout July to raise money for the club's two chosen charities – Animals in Distress – Torbay & Westcountry and Sound Communities CIC.
On Tuesday, July 21, Alby set off from the charity's rescue centre in Ipplepen after being welcomed by staff and volunteers.
Fellow Riviera Racers member Jane Rowell joined him for the marathon, which also took in a number of Animals in Distress charity shops across South Devon.
Before starting the run, the pair were given a tour of the rescue centre and met members of the charity's team, gaining an insight into the work carried out to care for homeless and vulnerable animals.
Their marathon route then visited the charity's shops in Newton Abbot, St Marychurch, Babbacombe, Preston, Paignton town centre, Totnes Road and Brixham, where staff and supporters turned out to cheer them on.
Jane said: ‘We would like to say a huge thank you to Clare, Lorna and all the staff at the Rescue Centre for giving us such a warm welcome and taking the time to show us around.
‘All the charity shops were amazing and so supportive as well. Everyone really got behind Alby and his challenge, and we are very grateful to them’.
Clare Meir, Community and Events Fundraiser at Animals in Distress, praised Alby's commitment.
She said: ‘We are so grateful for Alby's dedication, determination and generosity.
‘Running one marathon is a huge achievement, so to complete one every day for a whole month is truly remarkable.
‘Alby is an absolute superstar, and we wish him the very best of luck with the rest of his challenge’.
She added that every donation, no matter how large or small, would help the charity continue providing food, shelter, veterinary treatment and new homes for animals in need across South Devon.
Supporters can sponsor Alby's challenge and even suggest a route for one of his daily marathons.
He is due to complete the final run of his month-long challenge on July 31.
