MOST town councillors, the clerk, town hall staff and others were the hottest people in Newton Abbot on Wednesday.

While shoppers braved the bitter cold on the first of four late night Christmas shopping sprees, they went around the town for more than two hours in costumes dressed as popular characters from children's television and films.

They were the key elements in a Spot the Character competition sponsored by the Mid-Devon Advertiser series and Newton Abbot department store Austins, in which children carried a form to get it stamped by each of the characters.
