Terence Stone, managing director Terence Stone (Development) Ltd has sent us a copy of his letter to Teignbridge Planning Department, Morrisons, Midas Commercial and Chris Dent, architectural consultant:

Re the proposed supermarket, Broadmeadow, Teignmouth.

April 6 was the first opportunity to inspect the above proposals. Sadly, they relate principally to the supermarket. No thought has been given to adequate access to adjoining land for other purposes or providing improvements to the existing trading estate.

My company, established in Dawlish in l960, has developed hundreds of homes in Devon and Cornwall, particularly in Dawlish and Teignmouth, including a number of homes for the Teignbridge authority at the top of Kingsway, followed by the development of our starter homes scheme that provided the connecting link to Mill Lane.

We retained some nine acres on the gentle slope down to the sports centre. This area is shown as development land on the new Local Plan.

Together with Waitrose and Midas (Commercial Developments) Ltd, we submitted a combined proposal in 2007 which comprised remediation to the tip area, improvements to the trading estate for local business, a new supermarket and a substantial residential area comprising a mix of starter and affordable homes plus some larger units.

This is indeed an ideal site with a south west aspect and views, lying below the flats to the east and most compatible with the existing housing and local needs for homes, and it was well received at the time.

However, my company, our partners and development consultants and, we understand, some local councillors, are now belatedly informed the new proposals are close to acceptance. No provision is made for access to the ideal and out of sight backland which will provide for current housing and other future needs along the valley.

Given our comprehensive proposals, which provided for today's essential requirements and the years ahead, it is astonishing that no consideration has been given to future needs and the valuable local land assets that will be lost for good.

It is critical and of major importance to Teignmouth that provision is made now for an adequate through-road separated from parking areas to the valley beyond.

May we also suggest that the utility appearance of the supermarket might be enhanced with a pitched roof similar to others and the proposed business units.THIS AND OTHER LETTERS IN OUR ONLINE EDITION
