TEIGNBRIDGE MP Richard Younger-Ross has taken up the cause of Dawlish commuters who regularly miss the train because of overcrowding.

A number of complaints have been received that the 8.31am train from Paignton to Exmouth is so full that passengers are forced to wait for the next service.

Mr Younger-Ross has asked Wessex trains to increase the number of carriages on the train, particularly when it is being used by students who use the service to attend college in Exeter and Exmouth.

Wessex trains state that a lack of spare carriages owned by the company or to lease is the cause of the problem.

Mr Younger-Ross said: 'The government states that it is moving towards a unified transport policy. Exeter has seven railway stations and is one of the few compact cities where rail commuter travel should work well.

Our needs are simple, we just need additional train seating capacity at peak periods and significant numbers of people will be encouraged to use the train to Exeter.

Mr Younger-Ross has contacted the Strategic Rail Authority to ask for higher capacity trains.
