HIGHWEEK celebrated its 50th anniversary on February 12. Affiliation into the Devon County Federation was granted on February 8, 1957.

The venue was Highweek Village Hall, as was the first meeting. A great feeling of nostalgia was evoked as so many old friends were invited – some travelling quite a distance – and there was a lot of reminiscing, fun and laughter.

Chris Holland joined the institute in 1958 and has worked hard for it ever since, along with many others who joined shortly afterwards.

After a short business meeting, when the original minutes of the formation meeting in November 1956 were read, Jean Cox, who joined in 1960, gave a resumé of the last 50 years, with many amusing anecdotes.

Members organised a superb anniversary party and welcomed the county vice-chairman, Sally Wilson; county treasurer, Valerie Styles; and Stella Fernyhough, the secretary for sport and leisure, along with past presidents and members of Highweek WI and members from Buckfastleigh and Ashburton WIs. President Glenda Wright officiated during the evening and Mrs Fernyhough proposed the toast to Highweek.

Margaret Beech brought a splendid cake made by her partner, Bob, iced in WI colours and topped by the WI logo.

After a superb buffet, provided and cooked by the members, there was some lively entertainment. Glenda Wright, Jean Cox and Rosemary Deacon acted out an amusing sketch which caused fits of laughter, followed by a singing trio calling themselves Faith, Hope and Charity – comprising Sandra Woolner, Sheelagh McCaffery and Brenda Graham. Naomi Tucker related her unforgettable trip to a garden party at Buckingham Palace in 1964. Several members and guests won prizes in the draw. Mrs Wilson wished the institute continued success, and the hope of everyone present was that Highweek continues to thrive and go on for another 50 years.

'Everyone at Highweek WI works hard. It is a great deal of fun and they enjoy everything they do – for themselves and for others,' said the president. 'So, ladies, come along and be part of the next 50 years. You don't have to live at Highweek, there are lots of members from surrounding areas, and guests are always welcome.'
