TEN-year-old Kingsteignton girl Hannah Clatworthy has had a smashing time at the controls of a giant demolition machine.
Without any risk of getting into hot water she set about knocking down the former CR Willcocks building in Newton Road.
The site is destined to become home to a new Lidl store after the agricultural engineers moved to new premises in Heathfield.
Hannah, a pupil at St Michael's C of E Primary School, won the right to get stuck into the old building after taking part in a competition.
The idea came from Gilpin Demolition, the firm given the job of clearing the site.
Teacher Kate Vinnicombe said: 'Gilpin contacted us and asked if we would be interested in the competition so we said yes.
'The whole of year six were asked to design a tee-shirt that the children in our school could wear when working out in the environment, being eco-warriors.
'We explained that the winner of the first prize woud get to drive the digger and the pupil taking second place would have their tee-shirt design made.
'All the children took part and there were some fantastic designs.'
Headteacher Martin Harding was called on to choose from eight finalists and awarded Hannah first place and Katie Payne second.
Hannah's time at the controls was captured on video so her fellow pupils, who were not allowed on site, would be able to see exactly what she got up to.
