Ashburton Hash House Harriers celebrated their anniversary with a run around the River Dart Country Park and Hembury Woods.Prior to the start, grandmaster Ian 'Rick O'Shea' Hutchings, wearing a flowing silver cape, welcomed more than 100 present, past and visiting hashers, including founders Peter 'Biggles' Flick and Pete 'Windy' Webb.Little did those two realise, back in 1984, how many would enjoy the camaraderie, the fun and the rejuvenation that comes from a run around the glorious Devon countryside each Tuesday evening – in 2008, more than 300 runners turned out with a weekly average of 56, come sun or rain, in the light or in the dark. The trail was laid in flour by one of the newer hashers, 'Sweet Pee', assisted by 'Arfanar', with enough cunning to slow down the faster runners and bring all together for a regroup party of champagne and jelly in the grounds of the country park. Well exercised, the hashers relaxed in the bar with beer and curry. 'Biggles' cut the birthday cake made and decorated by 'Silly Moo', a young mum who is taking a hashing career break just now.A thoroughly successful evening thanks, in no small part, to the management and staff of the River Dart Country Park, who welcomed Ash Hash and were not phased by the larger than expected gathering.Ash Hash always welcomes new runners.
