THE nine days of Shaldon Regatta were brought to a close on Monday. Chairman Mark Pile said that the historic summer event had attracted more entrants than last year and had been made a success by those who organised, supported and took part in the community event. Teignbridge MP Richard Younger-Ross presented prizes and cups. A number of names cropped up time and again, a testament to the level of involvement many competitors put into the regatta. The sailing races once again produced some familiar names among the victors including Tim Martin who won the John Wilkes Trophy in his Enterprise, Alex East who won the Jolly Boat Challenge Cup for the second year running and Dan Halburton who won both the laser class and the Amory Cup for helms under 18 years. Prizes for youngsters under 18 years, under 16 years and under 12 years who put in the best overall performance were the most coveted of the lot. Tommy Stoyle shared the Clarence Cup along with Ed Rawlings. Both seem set to dominate the rowing events as a pair for some years to come. Hattie Stoyle shared the Hulbert Trophy with Jack Saunders who both seemed to be in every event involving the youngsters, and winning numerous prizes during the week. The De Vey Jubilee Trophy was close-run, but judges decided to give it to Matt Pile for the second year running. Teignmouth girl Lucy Fall won the Grand Draw for the Regatta dinghy. Beach side activities, including Beach Kricket, brought the regatta to a close. The popular event attracted a mass of onlookers eager to forget the series between England and the Pakistan. The MCC Rejects finally won the cup having stumped the last of the Team Brummies when the latter only needed four runs for victory. The Bristol Taverners Trophy for the most promising young Kricketer went to Jack Saunders, while the most promising female player was Lu Lu Manning-Brown.
