A former pupil at Teignmouth High School, who was killed in the Battle of Britain, was remembered in a moving ceremony at the community college on Tuesday.

The deputy Lord Lieutenant for Devon, Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Stear, presented a plaque commemorating Pilot Sgt Gerald Edworthy to college student members of the Air Training Corps: cadets Russell Davies and Christopher Revell, of the ATC's 2401 Sqdn, Dawlish.

Also in attendance was Cllr Mary Strudwick, mayor of Teignmouth, members of the RAF Association and children from Hazeldown Primary School on a history lesson.

Pilot Sgt Edworthy, of 46 Sqdn RAF, was reported missing in his aircraft off the Essex coast on September 3, 1940.

The plaque will be placed beneath the school's roll of honour, outside the principal's office.
