ANOTHER KINGSTEIGNTON MOTHER writes: As a former Liberal Democrat voter I was disappointed, yet not surprised, to read the letter from Yet Another Kingsteignton Mother (June 2). Her response to my letter only serves to illustrate why I, and so many others who prefer to base arguments on researched facts, not hysterical mud-slinging insinuations, have become disillusioned with the Lib Dems. I don't know where YAKM has been living for the past two-and-a-half years but, if she had read the letters column in this paper in that period, she would have noticed numerous letters querying why Kingsteignton councillors of all persuasions were staying silent on the urban village proposals. All through this period we have witnessed Newton Abbot councillors putting forth their views on the various options within their town boundaries. In contrast, the Kingsteignton councillors have told us that they might be reported to the Standards Board if they so much as utter a word. Many villagers, including me, have found this baffling and deeply frustrating. We have had to listen to the spin of AWE telling us that they would fill in ugly redundant clay pits when it should have been obvious to all that they had their sights set on the Newcross Nature Reserve. Even as we witnessed the destruction of acres of mature woodland at Newcross, and breaches of planning conditions, silence reigned from our councillors. It took a member of KREAG to bring the matter to the attention of Devon County council. It was the 'mouth shut, eyes shut and hands on ears' approach, from our Lib Dem councillors especially, who had promised so much, that led me to join KREAG and vow never to vote Lib Dem again. If there are any apologies that need making it should be the Kingsteignton councillors who have remained silent over the last two-and-a-half years apologising to the electorate of Kingsteignton, not KREAG. May I remind YAKM that the Standards Board decision ruled that it was in order for even the most influential councillors in Teignbridge to comment on options in the LDF. As for talking to councillors, I understand that it was precisely the act of talking to councillors and getting nowhere that led to the formation of KREAG in the first place.
