The sun shone brightly on the traditional annual Lamb Pie Day festivities in Buckfastleigh, providing ideal conditions for a street party atmosphere to develop, writes NIGEL CANHAM According to mayor, Cllr Donald Joint, the town was buzzing with happy activity as visitors and fun-seekers made the most of the stalls and attractions which ran the length of the main street. 'There were a lot of people and a lot of interesting stalls,' he said. 'It was a good day altogether, and one which stayed peaceful, with no trouble as the evening wore on.' Cllr Joint was given the onerous job of judging the several lamb pies made by the townsfolk and, after chomping his way through a number of entries, gave the top prize to the not so traditional pizza parlour. 'It was an exceptional pie in every respect,' he said, before announcing that the third prize had actually gone to a holidaymaker who decided to have a go at the last minute. Other distractions included street artists and jugglers, who, Cllr Joint said, were 'superb', a balloon race, guessing the weight of a pair of 'lambs' and a bucking bronco ride. 'Thanks must go to the traders' association who arranged it all and in particular to Peter Collins who spent all day running here and there to make sure everything went smoothly,' said Cllr Joint.
