AN INQUEST has been opened into the death of a former policeman who had been charged with sexual offences.
Simon Knott, 57, faced four charges relating to two females; one a girl under 14 between 1990 and 2013.
An inquest was opened today at Devon Coroner's Court and Area Coroner Alison Longhorn said Plymouth born Mr Knott died at his home in Rowan Close, Ogwell, near Newton Abbot, on March 17.
This was two days before he was due to appear before magistrates.
The former Devon and Cornwall officer had been living alone at home and was 'subject to a police investigation' and there were concerns for his welfare, said Miss Longhorn.
Police went to his home and found him suspended by a ligature.
Mr Knott faced three charges of indecent assault and one of sexual assault and the case has been withdrawn following his death.
The inquest has been adjourned for a full hearing to take place at a later date.
