BUCKFAST Spinning Mill could be demolished if Dartmoor National Park planners give their approval.
The mill closed in 2013 with the loss of 125 jobs and all equipment inside the building in Buckfast Road has been stripped out, leaving a derelict shell.
After the closure of the mill, the nine-acre site was bought by neighbouring Buckfast Abbey from administrators, in a bid to regenerate the area and create new jobs.
Now an application has been made to the national park to tear the former mill down.
Experts say the disused building itself has no heritage or architectural merit.
Despite the building’s associations with the textile industry across two centuries, heritage assessment carried out on the site concludes: ‘Its fabric is either modern or extensively altered and contains no architectural features of historic interest.
‘There is nothing identifiable which might have associative value to past people, events or aspects of life.
‘The building has no aesthetic value and can be described as an unsightly, derelict structure.’
