BOVEY Tracey 'old-boys' led the way for Chagford Cricket Club at their awards evening.
Colin Mortimore and Jeremy Christophers – joint captains of the league team – shared the club awards as well.
After their long-awaited promotion from the D Division during the 2007 season, Chagford had the worst possible start to the season, losing their first five completed matches, and this, coupled with dreadful weather robbing them and all other clubs of further matches, led to an 'interesting' season.
Chagford occupied a relegation positions in the league until the penultimate weekend of the season.
Injuries and unavailability, and the loss of John Jenkins, the leading bowler in the D Division the year before, robbed the team of a settled line-up – the team was only at full-strength for one fixture.
'It was down to Colin and Jerry that we stayed up,' said president Mike Wreford.
Mortimore finished second in the league batting aggregate by just three runs to Dunn, the Kiwi playing for Ivybridge, with a total of 457 runs at an average of 41.55.
Christophers ended the season six wickets behind Nandana, the Sri Lankan academy player who secured promotion for Clyst Hydon, with 35 wickets at 13.19.
'The difference between the 2007 and 2008 was substantial – being at the top one year and the bottom the next, but next season will be different again,' said Wreford.
'We have already secured the services of another former Bovey player, Mike Gribble, who shared in our triumph of winning the Premier Division in 2002. In fact he was captain,' said Mortimore.
'We think we need a couple of good quality players, preferably a young opening bat and opening bowler and we should be pushing for promotion next season.'
