A WOMAN was rescued by firefighters from the first floor bedroom of her Kingsteignton home today (May 15) as flames blocked her escape route from the property. The woman, thought to be in her 50s, was half in and out of a window at the blazing property in Priscott Way with smoke billowing from the room she was trapped in. Firefighters used a triple extension ladder to reach the woman and lower her to safety. She was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation before being taken by ambulance to hospital for further treatment and assessment. Fire chiefs praised the actions of a neighbour who raised the alarm and was able to provide valuable information about the incident as Newton Abbot firefighters rushed to the location. She was also able to reassure the woman and to give the distressed occupant best advice about surviving the ordeal relayed to her by the fire service spokesman Phil Scammells said after the drama: ‘She did a very good job in the circumstances.’ He confirmed the woman was not able to escape from the house as the fire on the stairs and hallway was blocking her way out. ‘Smoke was coming from the window where we rescued her from. We put the ladder up and guided her to safety,’ said Watch Manager Scammells. He said the stairs suffered fire damage while the rest of the house – now uninhabitable – was smoke-affected.
