Michael Fairweather, of Fairweather News, Northumberland Place, writes:

Might I suggest that the problem with parked cars 'clogging" the streets may have something to do with the lack of available parking in town. Couple this with parking wardens who do not do their job properly, preferring the easy targets to actually ensuring a good flow and turnover of vehicles, mixed with illegal, confusing and incorrect road markings and it's no wonder people park in 'safe' residental areas.

It was also nice of two councillors to moan about parked cars, but only in the streets where they live. Just look after yourselves lads, that's what you were elected for.

Further on in the article, we see, once again, councillors showing their blinkered pursuit of the tourist pound. To say the only industry here is tourism shows an incredible lack of awareness and is insulting to the people who live and work here. It seems every opinion and decision they have to make is geared towards tourism.

Teignmouth is a lovely place, visitors will come, and stay, if they can easily park. But continually forgetting there is a sizeable population that live and work here all year round could be a grave mistake.

That the comment comes from someone who's been a councillor since the old king was a boy just makes it worse.

With regards to the one-way system in George Street, there seems to be some confusion as to what needs to be done. Den Road through to Somerset Place should be one way in that direction. There is no need to change the part of Brunswick Street that runs from the seafront to George Street at all. We have been promised this change for two years and to suggest putting it off for another year serves no purpose. We've all seen it doesn't work.

If any doubting councillors could be bothered to come and talk with the traders around here, perhaps they might get a clue as to the damage being done. They obviously haven't noticed the large increase in traffic along Bank Street after 6pm either.

Cllr Cox's suggestion that we could have free parking in Northumberland Place is an interesting one. Perhaps he could come and point out to us all where there is any paid for parking in Northumberland Place, because we can't find any!

If any of them wish to discuss this further, in a friendly, convivial way of course, they know where to find me.
