SENIOR Teignbridge councillors have approved moves to explore a possible new future for Teignmouth Lido. Teignmouth Community Development Trust and the Kingsway Meadow Community Association had jointly proposed a takeover of the council-run seafront pool and its development into a business and training academy and water sports centre of excellence. The lido is one of just a few examples of its kind left in the country and plans put forward could mean more use throughout the year. Impressed with the ideas, but aware of concerns about a takeover, the council suggested that a partnership could be the way forward. At Forde House, Newton Abbot, on Monday members of the executive committee agreed to conduct further negotiations and to explore how community groups could be involved in the lido's management. Cllr Stuart Barker said that keeping volunteers on board would 'promote local ownership' and help exploit the 'huge opportunities' the project offered. Cllr Vince Fusco, who represents the town at the district council, voiced a concern that the lido should remain open to everyone and not be allowed to become a members-only club. He asked that Teignmouth Town Council be given time to discuss the idea, something, he said, could be done quickly and not hinder the negotiations. Leader of the council, Cllr Alan Connett, said that 'speed in Teignmouth is always appreciated' and he was sure the council would be given time. He also said that whatever final decision about the lido was reached that its management should be clearly defined. 'You can't have too many cooks in the kitchen,' he warned.
