Two kayakers had to be rescued from the River Teign after their kayak overturned this morning (Wednesday, August 12).

The pair were in the water near the mouth of the river, where they were caught up in the fast-flowing tide.

Teignmouth RNLI was paged to the incident at 10:20am by Solent Coastguard.

The casualties were rescued and helped safely ashore by the lifeboat crew, with help from RNLI Lifeguards South & East Devon.

Teignmouth RNLI is advising all kayakers to wear a properly fitted buoyancy aid at all times.

Kayakers should also check the tide times before setting out, and ensure they understand how the tides may affect their chosen route. They should also check the weather and sea conditions.

Anyone who gets into difficulty on the water, or sees someone else in danger, should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
