In last week's Advertiser/Post Nick Parsons, of Bishopsteignton, suggested allocating more time at the Bridge road traffic lights to vehicles coming from the Bishopsteignton to Bitton park road direction, on the basis that bridge road traffic gets far more time allocated to it than it should.

I think he considerably underestimates the amount of traffic coming over the bridge from Shaldon and the Torquay direction, where a change of phasing would add further delays to the substantial ones that often already exist.

The Morrisons' traffic lights have certainly added to the problems caused by the generally poor phasing of lights throughout the Bitton Park road area, right up to Waitrose. The phasing in general – and the number of lights in the first place – could usefully be reviewed.

However, it would help traffic flow from all directions around the bridge if the traffic emanating from the side roads between the bridge road traffic lights and Tesco Metro was forced to turn left and then to turn back onto its required direction at a new mini roundabout opposite the rugby club entrance.

At present there are numerous vehicles turning right from these side roads and across the flow of traffic, which causes considerable delays at busy times as oncoming traffic stops for them and vehicles straddle both sides of the road as they attempt to slot in.

Turning them left – emergency vehicles excepted – would minimise these hold-ups.
