Following public complaints about a rise in litter and dog bags across South Devon, Teignmouth Town Council is taking action to tackle the growing levels of rubbish being reported.

The town council says problems have been getting worse as lockdown restrictions are eased.

Recently they have found lighted barbecues buried under sand by people who didn’t want to dispose of them properly, along with other items left strewn on the beach.

People had used the recycling skips at Eastcliff Car Park as a waste tip.

The town council has hired a litter enforcement officer in a three-month trial to tackle the problem. The warden will issue £75 fixed penalty fines, which if refused would be followed up with a prosecution in court. The enforcement officers will wear clothing bearing the 3GS logo and carry warrant cards to identify themselves.

The man behind the idea, Cllr Andy Henderson, said: ‘Councillors are often approached by members of the public asking them to take action over offenders. It’s completely unacceptable to litter or not pick up after your dog and anyone who does so can now expect to suffer the consequences.

‘There has been an enthusiastic welcome from local residents, only a few grumbles. Teignmouth is a lovely place to live. We can all play a part to keep the town clean, green and safe.’

The town council will review the effectiveness of the wardens after the three month trial.
