A MOTORIST in his 90s was being treated by paramedics this afternoon after his car smashed into the Santander Bank in Newton Abbot town centre.

Shoppers could not believe their eyes when the Honda Jazz suddenly lost control and reversed into the front display window of the Queen Street premises just before 1.30pm.

One witness from the scene said: ‘It’s a miracle that no one was hurt because it’s such a busy part of town.’

It’s understood the Honda contrived to squeeze between a parked Vauxhall car and a sign post before wreaking havoc.

Hundreds of pounds damage was caused to the bank’s security window encasing a cash withdrawal machine.

One local trader said: ‘We heard this loud bang when the accident happened. It made quite a noise. It must have been very scary for any customers in the bank.’

Police and paramedics were at the scene within minutes as a crowd of people gathered to see what the commotion was.

Another witness said: ‘An elderly gentleman was involved. I heard he was 92. A blanket was draped across the windscreen of his car. The Honda was scraped a bit, as was the parked vehicle.’

Police said the mishap was reported to officers at 1.20pm.

A spokeswoman said: ‘Officers were called to reports of a single vehicle collision on Queen Street, Newton Abbot, at around 1.20pm today.

‘A Honda Jazz was in collision with a shop window. The driver, a man in his 90s, was uninjured.’
