A Teignmouth man in his 20s was rushed to Torbay Hospital with a broken leg and suspected back injuries after falling down a shaft at least 10ft deep at the back of a Newton Abbot shop early on Wednesday.
He had climbed up the back of Tony Pryce Sports in Hopkins Lane on to a flat roof but fell down a hole to ground level and became stuck.
It is thought he was trapped from about 4.30am in the 5ft square hole.
It was not until hours later his screams for help were heard by Julian Avery, who owns Aaron Car Services opposite.
'I first heard the moans at about 6.30am when I came into work, but I couldn't work out where it was coming from,' said Mr Avery, who has run the business for 20 years.
