AS is the tradition, pupils from Wolborough CE Primary School, Newton Abbot, congregated at St Leonard’s Tower to perform their annual maypole dances.
Newton Abbot mayor Cllr Liz Roberts crowned the school’s May queen, Year 6 student Elizabeth Tabbron. And then the dancing began as Elizabeth, with fellow Year 6 student Nathan Rumbelow as master of ceremonies, and her two attendants, looked on.
Headteacher Tracy Hoare said: ‘It was a lovely sunny day and the whole school walked up to the tower and joined in.
‘Each year group had their own May dance and Year 6 danced around the maypole. It was the most complicated maypole dance in years, as directed by their teacher and assistant headteacher Simon Brown, but the children pulled it off beautifully.
‘Lots of parents came along to watch and walked back to the school with us for a picnic. We were lucky, as usual, with the weather. It never rains on May Day for us!’
