GREEN-fingered residents in Newton Abbot have been reaping all sorts of awards in this year’s Newton in Bloom competition.
The budding gardeners were presented with certificates, trophies and prizes by mayor Ann Jones at a ceremony on Monday evening.
Scooping up first in the supreme class was Ann Darke followed by Diana Osborne in second and Robert Layton in third.
Reigning victorious in the large garden category was Linda Barr with Elizabeth Frampton claiming second and Shane Tozer bagging third.
Suzanne Becker was the best with her small garden with Chris Sage taking second, and joint third going to Rosemarie Burley and Malcolm Bickham.
The prize for best town terrace house frontage went to Cheryl Wright followed by Tara Ruhen and Jackie Fradd in second and Mrs J Baker in third.
Picking up another award was Malcolm Bickham who was victorious in the hanging basket and/or container category.
He fought off competition from Jenny Pierson who came second and Mr F Akyol and Mrs H Mather who took third.
Crowned as the town’s champion resident was Suzanne Becker and a certificate of excellence was dished out to Bradley Barton, Haytor View and Wolborough Primary Schools for their displays.
Austins department store, the town’s railway station and the spiritualist church were among the traders and public services in the town to bag themselves a prize.
