A MEMORIAL garden to a Teignmouth Battle of Britain pilot has been laid out in the grounds of his old school.

Acting Pilot Officer Gerald Edworthy was shot down while attacking a large formation of German bombers and fighters over the Thames estuary on September 3, 1940. His body was never found.

During a service at Teignmouth Community College to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, a garden was dedicated in memory of Pilot Officer Edworthy, who attended the grammar school, which preceded the college.

The RAF laid on a low level flypast to coincide with the exact time of his death – 10.30am – and the helicopter crew stood to attention and saluted as they went over the college.

Teignmouth councillor Geoff Bladon, an RAF veteran, said it was 'a privilege and an honour' to be there.

'Witnessing the flypast was very moving and made many an eye water, including mine,' he said.
