PROPOSALS for a greenfield site at Mile End, Newton Abbot, which a developer has earmarked for 450 homes, will go on view at Highweek Village Hall on Monday, January 29. The public exhibition is part of a consultation with residents by Persimmon Homes, which has options on the land on both sides of Ashburton Road. Teignbridge Council's preference for major development in the Newton Abbot area is the northern option, which takes in a swathe of former clay working land between Kingsteignton and the A38. Paul Davis, the company's strategic land director, said that though the district authority's preference was the northern option, the former clay pit land next to Kingsteignton may not be able to produce enough houses in time. 'We think it would be short-sighted to rule out the Mile End site, which definitely would deliver up to 450 homes by 2016,' he said. Mr Davis said the site would have to be treated sensitively and they wanted to discuss the company's proposals and exchange ideas with residents and interested groups. Proposals include a mix of sizes and types of homes, with 40 per cent to be affordable, and a community building, doctors' surgery and a small shop. Consultants from Persimmon will be at the village hall between 3pm and 8pm.
