RESIDENTS and drivers in Starcross will have to endure a further week of misery as the closure of the main road through the village has been extended for yet another week.
Highways officers have announced the A379 will now be shut until Friday November 21.
County councillor Alan Connett explained: ‘Devon County Council says the extended closure is for one further week to ensure that the works are completed to a point that the building can be deemed safe and the road re-opened.
‘I appreciate the concern and disappointment that this closure has needed to be extended, especially given the reported and unfortunate pause in work a couple of weeks ago.
‘Hopefully, we’re at the tail end of this and the main road can be re-opened in a couple of weeks.’
The road closure is due to major work being carried out on the Driftwood Pub, previously the Galleon, which is more extensive than expected.
The closure has already been extended several times.
Diversion routes will remain in place but this has caused ‘chaos’ through the village’s residential streets.
HGVs were advised to use the A380 as a diversion but there have been reports this has not always been followed.
The work has had to be extended as when the render was removed from the building, repairs to the cob walls were more extensive than had been anticipated.
