MORETONHAMPSTEAD Carnival is being remembered over the last 100 years in a new exhibition.

Presented by Green Hill Arts, 100 Carnivals, 1 Community: An Exhibition is a vibrant celebration of Moretonhampstead Carnival as it marks its 100th event.

It takes place on August 28.

A spokesman said: ‘The carnival committee are doing their best to mark this big occasion in our carnivals history and we will be hoping to have lots going on.

‘The grand precession will take place usual time of 6.30pm, and the judging beforehand. we would love to make this year the best one yet.’

Running until August 30, the exhibition honours the rich tradition of carnival in our town and the creativity it continues to inspire.

On display will be a colourful mix of carnival props and costumes from across the decades, alongside photographs capturing the joy and atmosphere of past celebrations.

Also featured is The Carnival Frieze – a series of striking collages created by children from Moretonhampstead Primary School during last year’s Arts Award after-school sessions.

These collaborative pieces were inspired by the bold colours of Matisse and the rhythms of traditional carnival music.

A special highlight of the exhibition is the official first display of the community Carnival Banner – a textile piece co-created by local residents through workshops led by artist Melinda Schwakhofer.

These sessions, filled with shared stories and stitching, were funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

A spokesman for the exhibition organisers said: ‘As we mark this milestone – the 100th Moretonhampstead Carnival – the exhibition reflects on the shared experiences that have shaped our community over the decades.

‘We invite everyone to come and celebrate the tradition that brings us together year after year.’

Admission to the exhibition is free and Green Hill Arts Gallery in Fore Street is open from 10am to 4pm daily from Wednesday to Saturday.
