Budding young actors in the Tykes theatre group, Teignmouth, have performed at the National Theatre, London, after winning a competition.

They were selected to perform after taking part in the National Theatre Connections Project 2011.

Around 200 youth companies from across the UK and Ireland successfully applied to be part of the scheme – only ten were selected to go to the capital.

The aim of the initiative was to ignite the imagination of the young casts. the best theatre groups go on to perform on the London stage.

The cast and crew of 20 staged the play Shooting Truth, by Molly Davies, at the Cottesloe Theatre, London.

'It was a fabulous experience,' said Leigh Toney, artistic director of Tykes and director of the production.

'They did extremely well and were a real credit as they stepped up to the mark and acted professionally and didn't seem overwhelmed by the whole experience.

'They received a standing ovation at the end of their performance and I can only say it was thoroughly deserved.'

The day before their big performance, the Tykes team watched the opening of the festival to see other youth groups performing in the competition.

'It showed them the level they had to achieve,' said Leigh.

'They also enjoyed a workshop with a vocal coach and a session with a make-up artist.

'Overall it was a great experience for them. They have worked so hard and been so dedicated.

'We'd like to thank Steve Toney, who transported the set to and from London, Rich Baker, who offered technical support, Emily Bake, our stage manager, and Charlotte Bouchard, who helped with costumes and was a great support.'
